Some of you saw on my instagram last week the felt map of Canada that I had set out for my girls to play with. That amazing and beautiful creation was made by a lady on the east coast of Canada who runs a sweet little shop called Twig and Daisy. You must go check out her instagram account and see all the beautiful options she has. She has sets on parts of the body, parts of the heart, anatomy of a whale and fish, parts of a flower, layers of the earth and so much more. She also has so many different and lovely sensory bin kits. I know my eye is on the life cycle of a butterfly for when that unit comes up for us in the spring!
My kids love anything that is hands on and fun. Make it seem not like learning and they’re all over it! I also love the way they get to play around with this map until they get it right. Often times, the real learning clicks when kids get to experience something with their hands. On their paper maps, the can identify the provinces we have learned, but once they looked at it in a different format on the felt map, they couldn’t. I think that getting to consistently assemble the map and label it will go a long way to helping them really commit this to memory.
This was not a set that Allie had listed on her site already. I had noticed someone else on instagram sharing a felt set they had purchased from her and I clicked on the link to her page. Once there, I was so intrigued by all the different sets and knew my kids would love it. I had been trying to come up with a hands on way to help the girls get familiar with the map of Canada and this seemed perfect! I messaged her and explained what I was looking for, and after some back and forth we decided on this. After our chat, she took it from there with her creativity and created this beautiful manipulative for us to use as we learn about our country. I cannot recommend enough working with her for what you need!
I love that the felt background has the outline of the country so it gives them a framework to start putting the pieces in place, sort of like a puzzle.

I know this set will serve us well for years because it is made to be durable and it has content enough to last for more years. This year my goal is really to have them be able to identify each province (and Hailey knowing the capitals would be an added bonus) but I wasn’t planning on talking much about the bodies of water. I am looking forward to seeing this grow with us as we continue to learn about our country!
