You’ve seen homeschool consultants advertised on social media and maybe you’ve even heard people talking about them. But what is the purpose of a homeschool consultation? What would you use it for? While not necessary for everyone, there are times when this service can be quite beneficial.
Trouble Shooting problems
For some people, they don’t have a circle of likeminded homeschool friends to bounce ideas off of. Sometimes a listening ear is needed to help you sort out your thoughts. A homeschool consultant can listen to the struggles you may be having or things you’d like to change and help you come up with solutions. What might this look like?
- Help constructing a routine or rhythm to help with consistency;
- Ideas to navigate a particularly challenging subject, topic, or skill with one of your kids;
- Managing expectations;
- Tips for talking to doubting family members;
- and much more.
Curriculum Ideas
Selecting a curriculum can be fun but can also be extremely overwhelming. Homeschooling has come so far in the last few decades that there are now numerous companies creating resources for the homeschool family. There really is something for everyone. With the growth in companies as well as the growth in social media, we have access to more options than ever before. It can be difficult to sort through all the exciting and enticing options to decide what is best for your family.
During a homeschool consultation I will ask questions to get a feel for your family learning style and desires to help narrow down curriculum suggestions for you. I have spent the time researching so you don’t have to! This is not limited to curriculum but includes learning resources as well (hands on manipulatives, virtual apps, etc).
Homeschool Encouragement
We aren’t meant to do this alone. Even though as homeschool parents we have decided to be the primary educator of our children, we are not meant to be on an island alone. Sometimes we need to talk to someone who has been where we are to encourage us and remind us that all is well. During a homeschool consultation, I will hear your concerns and offer encouragement. Some things that homeschool parents typically worry or wonder about are:
- Is my child behind?
- Do I need to finish my curriculum each year?
- Am I equipped to educate my child?
- How do I know if my child has a learning disability? (Did you know HSLDA offers a free annual consultation with an Exceptional Needs Consultant to it’s members?)
- What resources are available for use?
- and so much more.
For people local to me I can also help with plugging them in to local activities and groups. I love to talk about homeschool and it makes my heart happy to help others feel equipped to educate their children as they wish.
